ECOSYSTEMS

AN ECOSYSTEM consists of all living things (birds, insects, plants...), the surrounding medium (water, air, soil, sun...THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT) and relations between them.
The components of an ecosystem are:

-BIOTIC FACTORS:all the living parts of an ecosystem, including plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms.

-ABIOTIC FACTORS: are non living parts. These factors are temperature, air, water, soil and sunlight.

TYPES OF ECOSYSTEMS:

1.Terrestrial ecosystem:
a)desert: plants and animals adapted to survive on little water. (cactus, camels, scorpions, lizards...)

b)Grassland: extensive grasses, the largest land animals live in grasslands( American bison, elephants, giraffes...)

c)Tropical rainforest: locations that receive amounts of precipitation. There are trees, plants like ferns, insects, spiders, snakes, monkeys...

d)Tundra: adapted to survive the long cold winters( seals, polar bears, arctic hares, arctic foxes ... live there)

2.Aquatic ecosystem:
a) salt water: OCEAN: a variety of plants and animals live there (crabs, starfish, worms, coral, whale, dolphins...)

b) fresh water: RIVER: flora and fauna of the rivers are different from the oceans because the water has different salinity. the species are adapted to the streams and slopes.(salmon, trout,....)

NUTRITION AND INTERACTION PROCESS IN THE ECOSYSTEMS

1. PRODUCERS: autotrophic living things make their own food from inorganic substances. Plants, algae and some bacteria are autotrophic living things. They are the base of all the food chains in all ecosystems.

2. CONSUMERS: heterotrophic living things get food by eating other living things.

 They can be:

A) PRIMARY CONSUMERS. Herbivores: feed on plants (rabbits eat grass)

B)Carnivores: feed on other animals

b1. SECONDARY CONSUMERS: feed primary consumers(foxes eat rabbits)
b2. TERTIARY CONSUMERS:feed secondary consumers ( eagles eat foxes)

C)omnivores: feed on both animals and plants

d)Scavengers: feed on dead animals.
e) Parasites: feed on other living things without killing them. For example, mosquitoes feed on blood from mammals.

3. DECOMPOSERS: heterotrophic living things who transform remains of living things into inorganic substances.(Fungi and many bacteria)

Food chains and food webs  show how living things in an ecosystem are connected.

Tropicmind.com: ecosystems and food chain

VOCABULARY-DEFINITIONS

FOOD CHAINS: Certain species eat other species. The food chain represents these relationships.

FOOD WEBS are better at showing how plants and animals are interconnected because they are a combination of various food chains.

COMPETITION: This is when species have the same needs(use the same food, territory, water...) and compete for them to survive. For example, cheetahs, lions and hyenas

MUTUALISM OR COOPERATION: This is when species interact and obtain a mutual benefit. For example, the relationship between bees and flowers. The bees obtain nectar from the flowers, and  the flowers are pollinated by the bees.

PARASITISM is the relationship between two species where one benefits while the other suffers as a result. For example, fleas live on the skin of dogs and suck their blood. The fleas benefit, but the dogs get weak and  their skin itches.

A POPULATION  is all the members of one species living in the same ecosystem.

A HABITAT is the place within an ecosystem where a population lives.

A COMMUNITY is made up of all the populations that interact in an ecosystem.

RELATIVE PRONOUNS--relatives clauses

1. who – se utiliza para personas: The man who lives on the second floor is a doctor.

2. which – se utiliza para objetos / animales: The book which you gave me is interesting.

Los pronombres relativos tienen una doble función: por un lado sustituyen al nombre que les precede (en los ejemplos anteriores, “man” y “book”) y por otro lado, tienen una función en la frase relativa: The man who lives …. (who = sujeto de la frase relativa) // The book which you gave me (which = complemento de objeto directo de la frase relativa)

Las conjunciones relativas

1. where – tiene como antecedente a un sustantivo que hace referencia a un sitio:
It’s the place where I was born.

AUDIOGUÍA MUSEO ANTÓN

3. THE END OF THE “ROMERIA”

Cast in bronze, based on the original plaster model which is conserved in the museum.
The work reflects folkloric aspects of Anton’s homeland.  ROMERIA 1

During its creation Anton was inspired by a drawing by Evaristo Valle, which he made a copy of in watercolour in 1929, now on display with this sculpture in the museum. ROMERIA 2

The end of the romeria stands out for the ease with which the artist resolves the composition, maintaining the balance by counteracting the body of the drummer, which carries more visual weight, with the incline of the bagpiper.  ROMERIA 3

This piece introduces into Anton’s work that note of fun and sarcasm which is akin to that of the cheerful and festive Asturian identity.  ROMERIA 4

4. EVARISTO VALLE, 1932

Cast in bronze, based on the original plaster model which is conserved in the Evaristo Valle Museum. EVARISTO 1

Portrait sculpture of the painter Evaristo Valle, who discovered Anton’s artistic capabilities, when he participated at the fifth La Felguera Provincial Contest in 1930.   EVARISTO 2

As a display of gratitude, Anton made this portrait sculpture. EVARISTO 3

There is no idealisation in this work; Anton only looked to showcase the subject’s personality, emphasising, with great accuracy, Valle’s most peculiar characteristics. EVARISTO 4

13.GRUPA VALENCIANA, 1933

The work is a copy of its 1906 namesake painting by Joaquín Sorolla, as is stated in the lower left part of the painting.  GRUPA 1

Anton signed the copy on the right: “April 1933 Anton.”  GRUPA 2

The painting depicts two young people atop a finely harnessed brown horse. GRUPA 3

The boy bears wealthy garments, meanwhile the young girl, behind, at the hind, flaunts marvelous Valencian farmer’s attire. GRUPA 4

Anton’s command of colour, light and composition can be observed in the creation of this work. GRUPA 5

We use the modal expression  'would like'(me gustaría) in English to talk about our desires and wants.
'would like' is a more formal way to say 'want' .

examples:
--hello. Can I help you?
-I'd like some bread and some jars of jam, please.
--Would you like a jar of home-made jam? it's strawberry.
--How much bread would you like?
